  • The majority of rooms have balconies, some with a lovely ocean view, but the hotel’s draw is its central position, in the heart of Lagos. The major historical attractions are less than a 10-minute walk away, as are the shops and some great restaurants.

  • Converted from former fishermen’s houses, the hotel has a chapel and museum incorporated into its structure. Most rooms have views of Ria Formosa. Courtesy boat transport is offered to nearby Tavira island.

  • An attractive website listing a number of farmhouses typical of rural Algarve. The directory also includes private guest-houses in the region.

  • This five-star hotel owns the magnificent San Lorenzo course. Priority of play at this par 72 scenic masterpiece is given to hotel guests.

  • Situated in the grounds of the exclusive Vale do Lobo resort, the Dona Filipa is well-situated for the Royal golf course, Ocean course and the San Lorenzo. A first-class tennis academy is also close by.

  • Guests of this five-star resort have the privileged use of the 18-hole Championship layout (Premier Golf Courses), which has hosted the Portuguese Open several times. There are a couple of 9-hole courses too. See Holiday Golf Courses.

  • Le Meridien Penina Golf & Resort

Surrounded by verdant woodland, the Penina has an 18-hole championship golf course (Premier Golf Courses) and a further two nine-hole courses. Four restaurants, horse riding, water sports and a health centre complete the package.

  • Refurbished to an early 20th-century design, the beige-and-cream façade faces a quiet park in the centre of Loulé. The town’s castle and Saturday market are both within easy reach, and the rooftop pool is a bonus.

  • Monte do Casal

Delightfully secluded in the countryside near Estói, the suites of this converted farmhouse overlook gardens of bougainvillea and swaying palms. The proprietor/chef trained at London’s hotels, and the menu is a hallmark of this special retreat.

  • A splendid old farm complex nestling in the heart of the countryside. An informal atmosphere pervades the rooms and apartments. Dinner can be arranged, and there’s a minimum two-day stay. (Camping also available.)
