The atmospheric ruins of Paderne’s long-abandoned Moorish castle are best appreciated on a Sunday morning when there’s little traffic on the nearby motorway. The thick outer walls of mud and sandstone and the remains of a barbican tower are all that exist of the original structure. Inside, the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Assunção lies in mournful pieces.

The castle is a little hard to find. Needless to say it's not in Paderne itself, but on the other side of the the A22. You can see it from the A22 but not get to it off that road. You have to head towards the EN270 and look carefully on the right-hand side of the road for a small track, just as you are getting out of the main area of houses. There is a hand written sign that says Castelo. Don't be fooled by the fact that the road goes to a cart track and goes cross the A22 itself. Just keep going. If after a trek you find yourself under a bridge where the A22 goes across then you missed the sharp turn about 50 metres before on the left. You cannot see the castle from this point anyway. Follow this path up a steep incline for a couple of hundred metres to a rough car park and the castle. From the top to can see the Roman Bridge in the valley below. The castle is in a good condition and worth the trek. There is a good view from here.
