Amsterdam

Amsterdam has an appeal that is absolutely unique. It’s a vibrant place, a treasure-trove of extraordinary artistic riches, and the living embodiment of 900 years of history, during which it rose to become the centre of a huge global empire. After a period of decline, it matured into today’s relaxed and tolerant modern metropolis. Elegant and serene, Amsterdam also has its seamy side, and this too is part of its character, as much as its famous network of canals. Whatever you are looking for, this small city packs a big punch.

  • The best view of this lovely side-canal is from the junction with 1e Bloemdwarsstraat (see Bloemgracht).

  • This cheap and cheerful chainstore purveying unintentionally kitsch interior supplies – be that a coffee cup or a toilet brush – has become something of an institution in the Netherlands. One regular customer even requested that her ashes should be scattered in one.

  • An Indonesian restaurant with interesting deco.

  • Amsterdam’s organic Saturday “farmer’s market” is a treat rather than a routine shopping trip. Cruise the stalls to the accompaniment of some fine busking and sample free goats’ cheese and other goodies – plus freshly-baked bread, flowers and a fabulous fungi selection.

  • Inexpensive, informal and Indonesian – head here after most of the city’s restaurants have gone to bed.

  • A brown, sweet, winter beer served in round glasses.

  • Boom Chicago

On a daily basis, this US comedy crew puts on satirical shows whose targets are anything from Dutch “quirks” to topical news issues. Big on laughs and big on beer. The latter, served in huge pitchers, is a welcome respite from the tiny frothy-headedpilsjes . Starwatchers note: Burt Reynolds once popped in.

  • Comedy performances in English, it is a theater experience that is part improv and partially scripted sketches. It's possible to dine before the show or just go for the laughs. Showtimes are: Sunday to Friday at 20:15 Friday late night at 23:30 Saturday at 19:30 Saturday late night at 22:30

  • This polished contemporary brasserie is popular with Dutch celebs for its well-reputed wine list, imaginative French cuisine, languishing lunches and hedonistic Sunday brunches.

  • Founded in 1914, this store has one of the largest collections of sheet music in the world.
