Amsterdam

Amsterdam has an appeal that is absolutely unique. It’s a vibrant place, a treasure-trove of extraordinary artistic riches, and the living embodiment of 900 years of history, during which it rose to become the centre of a huge global empire. After a period of decline, it matured into today’s relaxed and tolerant modern metropolis. Elegant and serene, Amsterdam also has its seamy side, and this too is part of its character, as much as its famous network of canals. Whatever you are looking for, this small city packs a big punch.

  • De Reiger is the king of theeetcafés . Join the contented local clientele eating good food, knocking back the wine and just chatting (see De Reiger).

  • A stylish and popular brown bar-restaurant for those with discerning tastebuds. Not your usual “pub grub”.

  • Join quietly munching oldtimers, Dutch families and curious tourists in a cosily cluttered restaurant for a traditional Dutch meal.

  • Rembrandt sketched this leaning former lock-keeper’s house. There’s a peaceful canalside terrace at the back.

  • These two charming courtyards, just a few paces from each other, offer the weary visitor a calm retreat from the crowds (see De Star and Zon’s Hofjes).

  • Around 600 whiskies (most of them rare malts) are served at this specialist bar, which also runs an annual whisky festival.

  • Elvis, Versace and John Wayne ate at this sprawling 300-seater restaurant. Each room has a theme, including the Rembrandt Room. Today it touts New Dutch cuisine, using mostly organic ingredients.

  • Slow service, but infinitely worth it for the huge portions of delicious vegetarian food. House wine is the only alcohol served.

  • A veritable ode to the tooth, this shop specializes in every shape or size of toothbrush imaginable, and is sure to take your (bad) breath away. Mouthy Mick Jagger has even dropped by.

  • This Belgian bar (appropriately named “Drunken Fool”) has a huge range of beers. Delicious food helps soak it all up.
