Amsterdam

Amsterdam has an appeal that is absolutely unique. It’s a vibrant place, a treasure-trove of extraordinary artistic riches, and the living embodiment of 900 years of history, during which it rose to become the centre of a huge global empire. After a period of decline, it matured into today’s relaxed and tolerant modern metropolis. Elegant and serene, Amsterdam also has its seamy side, and this too is part of its character, as much as its famous network of canals. Whatever you are looking for, this small city packs a big punch.

  • Built 1603–11 by Hendrick de Keyser, painted by Monet in 1874. Climb to the top for great views.

  • Sleepy Delft was shaken by a gunpowder explosion in 1654, after which the town was rebuilt – as recorded inA View of Delft by Vermeer around 1660. Since then, little has changed. There are Delft tiles in the Museum Lambert van Meerten, and in the shops. In Het Prinsenhof you can see the bullet holes left by the murder of William of Orange; his mausoleum is in the Nieuwe Kerk.

  • If you don’t manage to snag one of the dishy Dutch, at least you can take home a Dutch dish.

  • Scholar and humanist (1466–1536). Friend of Thomas More, no friend of Luther.

  • Ferry crossing from North Shields (near Newcastle upon Tyne) to Ijmuiden (near Amsterdam)

  • Definitely a girl’s best friend, but possibly the worst nightmare of the poor guy who has to fork out for them.

  • With interior decoration in pinks, greys and blacks to reflect its Art Deco exterior, this long-established hotel near Leidseplein has more individuality than most.

  • Chef Martin Keus produces fantastic Mediterranean-inspired fish dishes (meat-lovers are also well catered for). Excellent value.

  • Unless you are really confident, it’s better to negotiate these on foot.

  • Hypertrendy fashion and interior shop from Germany, selling anything from moose scarves to retro bead curtains.
