Amsterdam

Amsterdam has an appeal that is absolutely unique. It’s a vibrant place, a treasure-trove of extraordinary artistic riches, and the living embodiment of 900 years of history, during which it rose to become the centre of a huge global empire. After a period of decline, it matured into today’s relaxed and tolerant modern metropolis. Elegant and serene, Amsterdam also has its seamy side, and this too is part of its character, as much as its famous network of canals. Whatever you are looking for, this small city packs a big punch.

  • Far from the madding crowd on a residential backstreet, this spruce little hotel has decentsized bedrooms and a touch of style in its 19thcentury moulded ceilings. Breakfast is included in the room price.

  • Friendly and efficient, with business-like rooms – though no particular business facilities – the Atlas is in an interesting Art Nouveau house near Vondelpark. Currently being renovated.

  • They are bigger than you, and can’t be steered; listen for their rattle and stay clear.

  • In a town which doesn’t quite have the 24/7 American mentality, this late-night store can be a Godsend – even if it is a little pricey. General groceries and a good range of alchohol.

  • Jools Holland and even Mick Jagger have popped into this new and second-hand record/CD shop specializing in jazz, soul, funk and R&B. Rare collector’s items to be had.

  • A bizarre café-cum-crochet store run by Gary, one half of the legendary “Christmas Twins”, a US cabaret duo. Pop in here for some “foam in rome” (cappucino), a spontaneous horoscope reading by Gary, or simply for cake and gossip.

  • American-style freshly-baked cookies and cheesecake, freshlys-queezed juices and (rare in Amsterdam) decent-sized cups of coffee.

  • Where can you find the best bread in Amsterdam? At this organic baker’s outlet, selling a delicious range of wholemeal bread and croissants, pizza, tofubroodjes and sugar-free oatcakes.

  • Bakkerswinkel van Nineties

This bakery with seats inside is an ideal spot for breakfast, lunch or high tea – but beware, it can get crowded.

  • A cup of strong black coffee, the way the Dutch prefer it.
