  • Admiraal

Join knowledgeable Amsterdammers and curious visitors to try Dutch gin or gloriously sticky liqueurs at thisproeflokaal -cum-restaurant. Charm a local by asking for a translation of some of the odder liqueur names (most are unprintable) (see De Admiraal).

  • April

A large, modern, comfortable gay bar that’s great for reading a newspaper in the day or meeting up for drinks pre-clubbing. Unusual feature: the circular back bar revolves when it gets busy.

  • Dating from 1890, this cool three-star hotel on the east side of town was originally a Roman Catholic orphanage, and later an asylum. On Fridays and Saturdays the madness continues, when some of Amsterdam’s top DJs spin at Tonight, the hotel’s adjacent two-floor “church-club”. A bit of a trek if you’re staying centrally, but worth the effort.

  • This small lounge bar, with its guest DJs, is just the place to get into the mood for a long night out on the town.

  • This establishment is not your average hole in the wall. It may be tiny, but Bar Bep is ultra hip with a cool interior and equally cool regulars. Enjoy the spicy Asian snacks and the music played by famous DJs (see Bar Bep).

  • Those in the know flock here for the tastiest Thai in town. Eat in their spacious restaurant or duck out to their snackbar opposite for a more informal, utterly authentic experience.

  • An absolute treasure in the heart of the Red Light District, this Mediterranean restaurant should be savoured for hours.

  • This trendy lounge barrestaurant is a relatively new adddition to the Pijp area.

  • In a pretty alley behind the Nieuwe Kerk, downstairs a caféand upstairs a restaurant providing Breton cuisine.

  • One of the smarterproeflokaalen (tasting houses) in the city – and unlike the rest, it closes late. Collapse on the couches and knock back the potent liquors andjenever .
