  • Named after the late Freddy Heineken (he of beer fame), who was a frequent guest, this quiet city-centre classic, complete with piano music, leather upholstery, soft lighting and discreetly friendly barman, is ideal for a classy pre-dinner drink. Dress up, act suave, and bring someone you want to impress.

  • Kitsch and quirky, this friendly gay bar-restaurant is one of the best in town. Unbeatable cocktails, delicious home-cooked food, tarot readings (Sundays), occasional live DJ (see Getto).

  • Getto

A haven of light and charm, a beacon of good taste and friendliness on the edge of Red Light district sleaze. Great cocktails, big smiles and a mixed, attitudeefree clientele are all part of the magic formula. DJs, bingo evenings and other activities liven up the week – and there’s a good restaurant too(see Getto).

  • Bright, modern and full of greenery, this veggie caférestaurant is 90 per cent organic. Perfect for a drink, a quick snack or a hearty meal.

  • Greenwoods

Australian-run, typically English tearoom-style café that serves great breakfasts and high teas. Service can be painfully slow, but worth the wait.

  • Knock back the cocktails while a DJ spins chillout music and upbeat house at this lounge bar-cumrestaurant serving international cuisine.

  • “The Blue Teahouse” in the middle of the Vondelpark is a 1930s architectural treasure, a trendy night spot and a great terrace café all in one. Snack on well-filled sandwiches under the trees, dance the night away to DJs upstairs, or just stop by for a coffee on your walk through the park (see Het Blauwe Theehuis).

  • One of the city’s original designer bars, this was the creation of renowned Dutch architect, Gerrit Rietveld. Inside, it’s bright and minimalist; outside, there are charming terraces.

  • A charming brown bar between the city’s main library and the Leidsestraat – equally suitable for bookworms and the shopped-out.

  • Art meets alcohol at this large, rustic-style bar, a popular hangout for students and creative types. Food served till 10pm.
