  • Amsterdam has an excellent integrated network offietspaden (cycle lanes), with white lines, cycle signs and dedicated traffic lights.

  • Don’t copy the locals, who frequently jump red lights and ride on sidewalks.

  • A café at the back of this museum in an elegant 1638 house by Philips Vingboons has tables and chairs that spill out into a glorious, mature garden – the perfect place to recharge your batteries (see Theatermuseum).

  • For a tranquil cycle ride, follow the Amstel from the city centre (start near Blauwbrug) to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. The route passes Amstelpark and the De Rieker windmill before entering attractive countryside. About 20 km (12 miles) round trip.

  • By law, you must turn your lights on after dusk – you must also have reflector bands on both wheels.

  • It’s usually tourists who mistakenly walk in cycle lanes; keep an eye out for parked cars, too.

  • Climb Amsterdam’s tallest tower to see the attractive jumble of the Jordaan below(see Westerkerk).

  • Perhaps the most peaceful part of Amsterdam in which to walk or cycle lies to the northwest of Centraal Station. The islands of Prinseneiland, Bickerseiland and Realeneiland, together known as the Western Islands, have a remote, bracing quality, with well-worn boatyards and white drawbridges, as well as modern housing.

  • Only a few minutes away from the bustle of central Amsterdam, Zandhoek (on Realeneiland in the Western Islands) feels remote and slowpaced. Cobbles, white drawbridges, 17th-century buildings and splendid old barges moored along the harbour front make a picturesque sight (see Western Islands).

  • The top of the Zuiderkerk gives a vista of the former Jewish quarter.
