  • Lof

Tantalizing aromas from the open-plan kitchen, clanging pans and cheery banter fill the air at this friendly, bistro-style local favourite. Amsterdammers in the know come for scrumptious, imaginative cooking, taking potluck from a set menu that changes daily.

  • This Mexican cantina is small, but size isn’t everything. Savour the authentic home cooking, between slams of tequila.

  • L’Indochine

Owner Kiet Anh Le flies in fresh ingredients for delicate Vietnamese dishes and spicier Thai cuisine. L’Indochine is not just an excellent Southeast Asian venue, but a superb restaurant in any category. Cream-and-white decor and a placid, watchful Buddha make for a calming atmosphere. Not to be missed.

  • Mamouche

Join a super-fashionable crowd in super-chic surroundings to experience the very best of Moroccan cuisine. Familiar dishes like lamb tagine and couscous share the menu alongside the chef’s much more elaborate and exotic creations, such as the delicious stewed rabbit and sesame with baked apricots and cinnamon seeds.

  • This small, rather plain French-Moroccan bakery and coffeeshop, serves irresistable croissants and cakes.

  • Live music or top DJs make a good start to an evening of clubbing (see Clubs).

  • When all else is closed, these night cafés open their doors through the wee hours, though tread carefully – some may be a little seedy.

  • Canalside chic is reinvented at this New York-style lounge bar, with champagne, cocktails and couches to kick back in. The food is hip, but sometimes it misses.

  • This late-night restaurant is the ultimate in decadent dining. Kick off your shoes and lounge on mattresses while food is served to you from bronze platters. DJs enhance the Arabian experience at weekends.

  • This peaceful bar opens around 8pm in the evenings and stays open later than most. The premises extend in the summer to an outdoors terrace on a fairy-lit barge.
