  • With a vibrant colour scheme in red and orange, the Ramada has plenty of panache, plus the bonus of a garden, a roof terrace, and particularly accommodating staff.

  • Great location, rooms for up to four people and budget prices sound like a pipe dream, but this welcoming hotel at the station end of the Keizersgracht has them all – and a bar and restaurant to boot.

  • Close to the Amstel, on a peaceful canal, the Fantasia Hotel is clean and well organized. The rooms on the top floor have the most character, but all rooms have a shower and a phone.

  • You can peer down into the lovely Rijksmuseum garden from the plain rooms at the back of this modest hotel occupying the top floors of a Victorian house. The Museumzicht’s greatest asset is its splendid location.

  • Behind a dull façade, a row of 17th-century houses – 19 in all – have been knocked together to create a luxurious hotel.

  • This monumental hotel, with 468 rooms and 36 apartments, has come a long way from its beginnings as a humble coffee shop. The facilities are phenomenal. Of the four restaurants, the original cast-iron and glass Winter Garden is the most stunning.

  • NH Schiller

Teenagers might put up with parents in this famous Art Deco hotel overlooking the neon glare of Rembrandtplein, once the meeting-place of artists and poets. There are family rooms, and the kids can escape to the buzzing Schiller Café.

  • Handy for the RAI Congresgebouw, the Okura offers top-of-the-range luxury and facilities to business travellers. It has four restaurants, including the Ciel Bleu perched on its 23rd floor.

  • A favourite among Amsterdam’s gay hotels, the Orfeo is centrally located near bustling Leidseplein. It has friendly, helpful owners, a convivial bar and free Finnish sauna.

  • Although there are no particular facilities for children (beyond triple rooms and cots for babies), this family-run hotel in the Museum Quarter is noted for its friendliness. A stuffed owl in an alcove provides the name. The hotel has a neat little garden, and fresh flowers in the fairly plain rooms.
