  • This small, quiet B&B in an attractive canal house is squeaky clean, friendly and modestly priced. Small wonder, then that its 10 pretty bedrooms (some with shared facilities) are hard to come by.

  • Combining 21stcentury chic with beams and bare bricks, the Pulitzer is an innovative conversion of 24 canal houses, celebrated for its art exhibitions, courtyard garden and outstanding cellar.

  • A prime example of an Amsterdam hotel that, although not exclusively gay, extends a warm welcome to its many gay guests. Women in particular make this friendly, well-kept little hotel near Leidseplein their base, as do visiting musicians – Paradiso and Melkweg are nearby.

  • A row of seven unusual houses in this hotel-packed street represent the architectural styles of seven different nations. The Engeland, a cosy, gayfriendly establishment, occupies the English “cottage” amongst them, plus the Netherlands house next door.

  • Situated around a dramatic atrium, this well-run hotel takes up most of the street and comprises several old houses, a paper factory and an 18th-century vicarage, part of which has become a lovely candlelit bar. The hotel’s health and conference centres are across the road, connected by a tunnel.

  • This immaculate, good-value hotel has a wonderful antique breakfast room and spacious contemporary bedrooms that can accommodate up to six people.

  • A wide range of facilities at surprisingly reasonable rates distinguish this central hotel. The business and conference centre occupies a former Lutheran church. The hotel has a health centre, brown café, boat dock, car parking and apartments, in addition to the usual bedrooms and suites.

  • In the University District, this smart new complex of studio bedrooms, each with kitchenette, is patronized mainly by visiting academics.

  • A gay-friendly hotel situated behind the Concertgebouw in the Museum Quarter. Though plain, most of the 20 rooms are spacious, some with features such as fireplaces and window seats. The breakfast room opens on to a pretty garden.

  • A tired bridge-spotter can count seven from this charming hotel without moving. Immaculately decorated, it has wooden floors, Persian carpets and furniture that would grace any auctionhouse catalogue. There are no public rooms, so you can have breakfast in bed without a twinge of guilt.
