  • This is a luxuriously laid-back hotel in a fivestar neighbourhood, where beautiful antiques complement the even more beautiful guests. To simplify your bill, breakfast, tea and evening drinks are included in the cost of the accommodation.

  • Animal-loving children will enjoy staying opposite the Poezenboot. The family-run hotel has an excellent location on a pretty stretch of the Singel, and small but characterful bedrooms. Under-sevenyear olds stay for free, and babysitting can be arranged.

  • The noise and bustle of Damrak is alleviated by a touch more style and intimacy than in most other business hotels in the area. Bedrooms are stylishly modern and well-insulated, and there is a fitness centre.

  • British designer Anouska Hempel has taken a Catholic almshouse and turned it into a glamorous hotel with an excellent restaurant (see Blakes). Influenced by Asia, the theme is monochrome, with gorgeous fabrics and furnishings.

  • Recently renovated, this graceful but comfortable 17th-century canal house has all the modern technology you could wish for, and at modest prices.

  • There is a decidedly English air about this elegant, plant-filled villa south of the Vondelpark. The public rooms are furnished with antiques and oil paintings, and you can take tea in the delightful garden.

  • Clean, cheap, simple rooms away from the tourist traps, bikes for rent, free maps, and friendly advice on routes and sights attract a young clientele. What might be a lounge elsewhere is “a chill-out zone” here in De Pijp.

  • On the corner of Damrak and opposite Centraal Station, this monumental building has a surprisingly calm and gracious interior. The hotel has a Business Centre, extensive conference facilities and a health and fitness centre.

  • Bedrooms are a cut above at this smart, gayfriendly hotel within easy reach of the artistic treasures of the Museum Quarter and the historic centre. The distinctive reception room has a black-and-white floor and antique furniture.

  • This small waterfront inn is a good option for families who prefer to stay outside the city centre. Just 10 km (6 miles) from the city by bus or bicycle, it’s in a charming village and there are family rooms.
