  • 1. De Admiraal

One of the smarterproeflokaalen (tasting houses) in the city – and unlike the rest, it closes late. Collapse on the couches and knock back the potent liquors andjenever .

  • 2. The Bar With No Name

Known to the locals as Wolvenstraat, this 1970s-style lounge bar-restaurant is the haunt of young advertising darlings and other affluent beings. Open from breakfast to bedtime, it serves imaginative sandwiches, soup and pan-Asian cuisine.

  • 3. De Pels

A low-key, easygoing neighbourhood bar – locals read the papers at the big table by the window. A great place to recover from a hangover on a Sunday (breakfast is served until 1:30pm).

  • 4. Het Land van Walem

One of the city’s original designer bars, this was the creation of renowned Dutch architect, Gerrit Rietveld. Inside, it’s bright and minimalist; outside, there are charming terraces.

  • 5. Lux

Split-level, late-opening designer bar. DJs spin every night.

  • 6. Het Molenpad

A charming brown bar between the city’s main library and the Leidsestraat – equally suitable for bookworms and the shopped-out.

  • 7. Morlang

Modern, minimalist space next door to Land van Walem. Impressive menu.

  • 8. Saarein II

Once an infamous women-only bar, now men are welcome. Quiet during the week, rowdy at weekends. Pool table, good bar food.

  • 9. Van Puffelen

The rich and beautiful flock to this elegant haunt – the biggest brown bar in town.

  • 10. De Zotte

This Belgian bar (appropriately named “Drunken Fool”) has a huge range of beers. Delicious food helps soak it all up.
