Amsterdam

Amsterdam has an appeal that is absolutely unique. It’s a vibrant place, a treasure-trove of extraordinary artistic riches, and the living embodiment of 900 years of history, during which it rose to become the centre of a huge global empire. After a period of decline, it matured into today’s relaxed and tolerant modern metropolis. Elegant and serene, Amsterdam also has its seamy side, and this too is part of its character, as much as its famous network of canals. Whatever you are looking for, this small city packs a big punch.

  • A Van Wees Distillery

A visit to A Van Wees Distillery in the Jordaan area of Amsterdam is an experience. It’s the last authentic distillery left in Amsterdam, and specialises in Old Dutch Genevas and liquors. We were shown around the distillery, and tasted the products, purchasing a fruit gin to bring home. Other drinks available include lemon gin, orange liquor, advocaat, apricot brandy, chocolate liquor, cinnamon liquor and ginger liquor – any of which would make Christmas an extra special experience to share with your friends. There is also a tasting room at 'De Admiraal' pub at Herengracht 319 in the centre of Amsterdam.

  • Just off Leidseplein and right next to a canal and the tram system, this is a luxurious hotel with turret rooms inside each suite and champagne breakfasts - perfect for romantic getaways.

  • An Indonesian restaurant with interesting deco.

  • Comedy performances in English, it is a theater experience that is part improv and partially scripted sketches. It's possible to dine before the show or just go for the laughs. Showtimes are: Sunday to Friday at 20:15 Friday late night at 23:30 Saturday at 19:30 Saturday late night at 22:30

  • This apparent pub is not really your ordinary pub. Only homebrewn beers are tapped here or sold in bottles. The furniture consists of bare wooden seats and tables next to a simple bar in this former municipal bathhouse. Already legendary among beerophiles, this microbrewery with local cult following only started out in 1985. Indulge in a range of fantastic beers served from friday to sunday. There's even a windmill right next to the brewery for aaaaall you tourist shnappers.

  • An amazing fondue place with a great atmosphere. You can order a steak with your fondue and cook it how you like!

  • Visiting Cafe Daalder has been one of the most "gezellig" dining experiences I have had in a long time. This traditional Dutch style brown cafe is conveniently located in the historic Jordaan area of Amsterdam and truly is a real hidden gem to the untrained eye. Daalder offers delicious high quality, creative cuisine at a very modest price indeed, which by far exceeded my initial expectations. A wonderful surprise to discover after a long string of disappointments after moving to the city. For those who appreciate beautifully presented, hand crafted dishes that wont blow your budget, this restaurant is an absolute must whilst in Amsterdam!

  • Condomerie

Stocked wall to wall with a huge, hilarious range of (mostly) novelty condoms of all shapes, colors, flavors, and sizes, the Condomerie is a must-see attraction on an adult tour of Amsterdam and guaranteed to spice up the most jaded of love lives.

  • Ferry crossing from North Shields (near Newcastle upon Tyne) to Ijmuiden (near Amsterdam)

  • The Dutch Resistance Museum tells the story of the Dutch people in Word War II
