    One of the best places in town to try the traditional Dutch custom of slipping a raw herring down your gullet. The less brave can settle for a salmon sandwich.

  • 2. Het Blauwe Theehuis

    This teahouse in the Vondelpark is one of the city’s bestkept secrets, despite its central location.

  • 3. Broekmans & Van Poppel

    Founded in 1914, this store has one of the largest collections of sheet music in the world.

  • 4. Concertgebouw

    Every Wednesday at 12:30pm (except in summer) there are free lunchtime concerts here. Atmosphere informal, quality unsurpassed; queue early.

  • 5. Filmmuseum

    Don’t miss the live musical performances to silent classics, or the open-air screenings from the historic building’s balcony in summer.

  • 6. Friday Night Skate

    Join this huge group of skaters for a free, two-hour, 15 km (9 mile) tour of the city. Anyone who is reasonably proficient can join in. Gather from 8pm.

  • 7. Hollandsche Manege

    One of the more unusual places to stop for a drink in town. The upstairs café of this stables overlooks the sand arena below as classes are being held.

  • 8. De Peperwortel

    Just two minutes from the Filmmuseum, this charmingtraiteur is ideally placed for picnicking in the park. Delicious quiches, pasta, salads and soup, with vegetarians particularly well catered for. Plus a choice selection of wine.

  • 9. Vondelpark Openluchttheater

    Catch a bit of drama, flamenco, puppetry or pop in the Vondelpark’s open-air theatre.

  • 10. Zuiderbad

    This recently restored Art Nouveau swimming pool, dating from 1911, is the city’s most stylish place to bathe.
