Top 10 Bars
-
1. Janvier
A relaxed, stylish and friendly place, perhaps the service is a bit slow but that’0s part of its subdued charm. A perfect atmosphere for sitting back and spending a peaceful afternoon, especially on a sunny day when you can sit on the wonderful terrace overlooking tranquil Amstelveld. The food is New Dutch, mixing French and Eastern elements with traditional Dutch dishes (see Moko).
-
2. Noa
IT wizards, followers of fashion, advertising executives and other representatives of hip, young Amsterdam crowd in to the place that set the trend for the new lounge bar scene. Rub shoulders with all of the above as you knock back the drinks or slurp up Japanese noodle soup before heading off to party the night away somwhere else (see Noa).
-
3. Bar Bep
This establishment is not your average hole in the wall. It may be tiny, but Bar Bep is ultra hip with a cool interior and equally cool regulars. Enjoy the spicy Asian snacks and the music played by famous DJs (see Bar Bep).
-
4. Winston International
Once, the Winston was hip though seedy, but a major refit in recent years has transformed it into one of the hottest places in town – a vortex for artists and musicians. A young, creative crowd comes here for the good DJs, live music and generally gogetting atmosphere. Spot the next generation of music stars, or just kick back and have a good time (see Winston International).
-
5. De Duivel
Tiny, packed to the gills and very loud, “The Devil” attracts a young crowd from all over the world. Once upon a time the draw was hip-hop – and the chance of spotting a famous rap artiste at the bar. Now, times have moved on, the pace has changed, and the music is more likely to be on a classic funk tip. Get on down and shake your booty (see De Duivel).
-
6. Wijnand Fockink
Proeflokalen , the “tasting houses” of local distilleries, were once places to knock back a quickjenever (Dutch gin) before re-emerging into the winter’s air. Crooked and cosy, with wooden barrels lining the walls, this one dates back nearly 400 years. Drop in for a quick one (see Wijnand Fockink).
-
7. Admiraal
Join knowledgeable Amsterdammers and curious visitors to try Dutch gin or gloriously sticky liqueurs at thisproeflokaal -cum-restaurant. Charm a local by asking for a translation of some of the odder liqueur names (most are unprintable) (see De Admiraal).
-
8. Getto
A haven of light and charm, a beacon of good taste and friendliness on the edge of Red Light district sleaze. Great cocktails, big smiles and a mixed, attitudeefree clientele are all part of the magic formula. DJs, bingo evenings and other activities liven up the week – and there’s a good restaurant too(see Getto).
-
9. Freddy’s Bar
Named after the late Freddy Heineken (he of beer fame), who was a frequent guest, this quiet city-centre classic, complete with piano music, leather upholstery, soft lighting and discreetly friendly barman, is ideal for a classy pre-dinner drink. -
10. De Koe
