  • 1. Arena Hotel

Dating from 1890, this cool three-star hotel on the east side of town was originally a Roman Catholic orphanage, and later an asylum. On Fridays and Saturdays the madness continues, when some of Amsterdam’s top DJs spin at Tonight, the hotel’s adjacent two-floor “church-club”. A bit of a trek if you’re staying centrally, but worth the effort.

  • 2. Escape

One of Amsterdam’s biggest and most exciting clubs, which can hold up to 2,000 people, has a huge dance floor, hi-tech lighting, a multi-media environment and, as you would expect, a stunning sound system. At weekends it attracts a big out-of-town crowd.

  • 3. Odeon

A stunning combination of historic Amsterdam and sophisticated modern style. The Odeon has it all from a café, restaurant, cocktail bar to a concert hall which doubles as a night club. The ultra-chic interior is within a building that dates back to 1662 by one of the city’s loveliest canals.

  • 4. Melkweg

As well as regular parties that take place throughout the various rooms of this multimedia venue, DJs play before and after the live bands that appear on both stages. Most Saturdays there is a late-night dance party (see Melkweg).

  • 5. More

Less definitely is more at this hip, minimalist hangout, owned by the proprietors of the Supperclub and Nomads, the equally decadent, Arabian-style restaurant located upstairs. Amsterdam’s beautiful people descend here at weekends – but only when they feel like it.

  • 6. NL-Lounge

A free-entry lounge club with a plush, carpeted interior – complete with armchairs. It’s open daily, and delightfully decadent, although the drinks are a little on the pricey side.

  • Paradiso
    7. Paradiso

Formerly a church, now predominantly a live music venue, DJs spin here after the bands have been on – with an emphasis on Alternative music. The programming for parties can be erratic – anything from Moroccan dance nights to cinema-club evenings (see Paradiso).

  • 8. Panama

Monied 30-somethings with a penchant for champagne make the trek to this lavish, vaudeville theatre-style club with attached bar and restaurant on the east side of town. Entry is expensive; the drinks aren’t cheap either.

  • Vakzuid
    9. Vakzuid

This stylish and spacious bar-club-restaurant is unusually located within the grandstand of the stadium built for the 1928 Olympic Games, hosted by Amsterdam. Relax in lounge heaven as you look out onto the track. In good weather, the outdoor benches are unbeatable.

  • Winston International
    10. Winston International

Eclectic and inspired programming give this small, rococo-style venue an edge on the city’s other clubs. Easy-tuners with a taste for the unusual head here for Sunday’s Vegas nights. An additional plus: it boasts the smallest art gallery in Amsterdam – in its toilets.
