  • 1. Quentin Engeland

A row of seven unusual houses in this hotel-packed street represent the architectural styles of seven different nations. The Engeland, a cosy, gayfriendly establishment, occupies the English “cottage” amongst them, plus the Netherlands house next door.

  • 2. Quentin

A prime example of an Amsterdam hotel that, although not exclusively gay, extends a warm welcome to its many gay guests. Women in particular make this friendly, well-kept little hotel near Leidseplein their base, as do visiting musicians – Paradiso and Melkweg are nearby.

  • 3. Amistad

Exclusively gay, this old hotel has been vamped up by its new, young owners. The rooms are stylish, with red being the predominant colour, and some rooms have shared facilities. Breakfast is served until 1pm. It is close to the clubs and saunas.

  • 4. Greenwich Village

In the same gay enclave of Kerkstraat, the Greenwich Village provides simple, friendly accommodation at a very reasonable price. There are 11 clean but plain bedrooms.

  • 5. Golden Bear

First opened in 1948, the Golden Bear has been a popular exclusively gay hotel ever since. With a pretty façade and 11 clean, neat rooms, some with shared facilities, it’s situated in Kerkstraat – a street in the Canal Ring where there are several other gay venues.

  • 6. Waterfront

Bedrooms are a cut above at this smart, gayfriendly hotel within easy reach of the artistic treasures of the Museum Quarter and the historic centre. The distinctive reception room has a black-and-white floor and antique furniture.

  • 7. Sander

A gay-friendly hotel situated behind the Concertgebouw in the Museum Quarter. Though plain, most of the 20 rooms are spacious, some with features such as fireplaces and window seats. The breakfast room opens on to a pretty garden.

  • 8. Orfeo

A favourite among Amsterdam’s gay hotels, the Orfeo is centrally located near bustling Leidseplein. It has friendly, helpful owners, a convivial bar and free Finnish sauna.

  • 9. Black Tulip

Only in Amsterdam – an exclusive hotel, opened in 1998, for gay men into leather and bondage, with appropriate equipment in each room. It’s appropriately located too, near the “leather area” and Centraal Station.

  • 10. Flatmates Amsterdam

Not a hotel but a service offering a variety of accomodation: an apartment on Nieuwe Achtergracht (near the Theater Carré), several studio apartments in the city centre, and an exclusively gay B&B on Vijzelstraat.
