  • In a town which doesn’t quite have the 24/7 American mentality, this late-night store can be a Godsend – even if it is a little pricey. General groceries and a good range of alchohol.

  • Unusual for Amsterdam, a late-night bar, on one of the prettier, quieter canals in the Jordaan.

  • A whisky-laced hot chocolate in one hand, and a bishop in the other … when the heavens open, hole up in this delightful chess café for a few hours and checkmate your opponent.

  • GO Cantina

Every so often a dining table is set up within this art gallery space and GO goes gourmet.

  • The “Jordaaners” are fiercely proud of the accordion-laden oompah songs unique to this area. Over one weekend mid-September, outdoor stages are set up on this filled-in canal, and the beer and bellowing flow freely.

  • Stockists of a prodigious range of olive oils selected from small farmers around the Med. Also, vinegars, mustards and spices.

  • Pancake Bakery

Although unashamedly touristy, you could do a lot worse than this restaurant in a former 17th-century warehouse named “Hope” to sample the local fare.

  • A paradox in itself, this coffeeshop shows few traces of serving “the herb”. Fresh fruit and veg shakes, healthy food and a bright interior make it a perfect place for breakfast or lunch.

  • Simply the best quick-stop in town for sandwiches, carrot cake and other delicious offerings. Eat in at the counter or take away.

  • Beginners and pros jam together in the Jordaan’s famous jazz bar for musicians and jazz aficionados alike. Pros play every Friday. Closed Saturdays and Sundays.
