Andalucía and Costa del Sol

The diverse and politically semi-autonomous region of Andalucía has a population of some 7 million and embodies what is thought of as typically Spanish – an accurate portrait of the place and its people must include the bullfight, flamenco, gypsies, remote white villages, high sierras and mass tourism on endless stretches of beach. The memories you take with you after a visit here will be colourful, joyous, intense and deeply stirring.

  • The flamenco clubs burst with life in Cádiz. Good bets include Peña La Perla and Peña Enrique el Mellizo.

    The zone around the harbour is loaded with venues and Anfiteatro is one of the best. Open Friday and Saturday only.

  • On the south side of the town square this traditional bar is a classic Sierra place for coffee and a pastry.

  • This café has been cut into the cliff, so you have views of the sea while protected under palm frond umbrellas.

  • This place is heaven on earth for those with a sweet tooth. The decadent chocolates and sweets will satisfy even the most discerning of chocaholics and cake lovers.

  • All along the coast, you will encounter whole baby calamares (squids) served grilled – the essence of simplicity and delicious as long as they are fresh. A common alternative is to cut them into rings and batter-fry them – again, if they are fresh, they will taste sweet and tender. A complete fritura de pescado or fritura mixta (mixed fish fry) might add anchovies, prawns, chunks of cod or whatever is good that day.

  • This Málaga-born writer’s Andalucían Scenes (1847) featured the first ever description of a gypsy festival.

  • This pedestrianized promenade is the principal shopping street of old Seville. Here’s the place to window-shop for all the traditional flamenco and feria gear, and certainly the place to be seen during the early evening paseo .

  • This place is popular with devotees of rural cookery. Specialities include somillo de cerdo ibérico en salsa de setas (Iberian pork chops in wild mushroom sauce) and for dessert tarta de castañas (chestnut tart).

  • Camping and bungalows are available here. It’s a chance to take beautiful walks or horse-ride in the countryside around Ronda.
