Andalucía and Costa del Sol

The diverse and politically semi-autonomous region of Andalucía has a population of some 7 million and embodies what is thought of as typically Spanish – an accurate portrait of the place and its people must include the bullfight, flamenco, gypsies, remote white villages, high sierras and mass tourism on endless stretches of beach. The memories you take with you after a visit here will be colourful, joyous, intense and deeply stirring.

  • This gay bar has a basement dance floor and curtained booths, as well as monthly drag shows and striptease contests.

  • The least tacky of the flamenco shows aimed at tourists, ahthough without the soul-stirring authenticity of the real thing. If you come for the first show, you can watch the second for free. (see Top 10 Flamenco Venues)

  • First-class performances.

  • Rows of antique wine barrels create the atmosphere here. The cheese boards are a good bet, as well as montaditos (small open sandwiches).

  • In a town noted for elegance, its best restaurant is formal, as you would expect. It serves excellent seafood.

  • This is a popular disco in the caves of Sacromonte (see Moorish Granada: Albaicín). Music echoes from four dance floors to the rooftop terraces, offering a striking view of the Alhambra at sunrise. Weekends are the time to go, unless you want the place to yourself.

  • If you’re in the mood for Moorish opulence, this castle high above the town fits the bill. Elegant and rich furnishings, and a gourmet restaurant too.

  • The Chorro Gorge is a deep ravine, worn through a mountain of sheer rock by the Río Guadalhorce. You can walk up to the rail bridge and through the tunnel to get the best views.

  • One of the city’s smartest eateries, serving traditional fare in a sumptuous setting. Try the eponymous churrasco (grilled pork loin with spicy red pepper sauce).

  • The name refers to an area noted for its reliable white wine. Local finos include Condado Pálido and Condado Viejo.
