Andalucía and Costa del Sol

The diverse and politically semi-autonomous region of Andalucía has a population of some 7 million and embodies what is thought of as typically Spanish – an accurate portrait of the place and its people must include the bullfight, flamenco, gypsies, remote white villages, high sierras and mass tourism on endless stretches of beach. The memories you take with you after a visit here will be colourful, joyous, intense and deeply stirring.

  • Andalucían gypsies have a reputation for their ability to train their steeds. To watch a gypsy horseman putting an animal through its paces is to witness an amazing display of communication between man and beast.

  • This charity hospital was founded by reformed rake Miguel de Mañara, the inspiration for the mythical lady-killer, Don Juan.

  • Founded in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, the structure is now a cultural centre. The church features a trompel’oeil ceiling by Juan de Valdés Leal.

  • Although it isn’t an official hostel or even aimed at backpackers, the price doesn’t get any better than this. The airy rooms have balconies facing the square. You can stroll along the sandy beaches or wander around the shops of this old and still authentic fishing village.

  • A great opportunity to rent a fully equipped apartment in this attractive town and to sample a bit of the real Andalucía.

  • With its striking Mudéjar-style architecture, this building epitomizes the city’s cross-cultural charm. It’s a great choice in the old quarter.

  • Hostal Séneca, Córdoba

Friendly and delightful, as well as excellent value. Stained-glass windows on the first floor and a patio with Moorish touches add to the grace. Book ahead.

  • In a leafy cul-de-sac, this is every inch a traditional Spanish house, with terracotta tiles, arched windows and a large patio. The rooftop terrace is perfect for admiring the nearby Alhambra.

  • These three cheery pensions , under the same management, are well located between the cathedral and the alcázar. Potted plants give the places an inviting feel and rooms are clean and comfortable.

  • Modern double rooms and a sun-terrace make this an acceptable option. Although it is not particularly near to the centre, it’s well connected by public transport.
