Andalucía and Costa del Sol

The diverse and politically semi-autonomous region of Andalucía has a population of some 7 million and embodies what is thought of as typically Spanish – an accurate portrait of the place and its people must include the bullfight, flamenco, gypsies, remote white villages, high sierras and mass tourism on endless stretches of beach. The memories you take with you after a visit here will be colourful, joyous, intense and deeply stirring.

  • This wonderful period building has preserved its atmospheric cloisters and charm, right in the heart of this captivating town. Most of the rooms have views of the castle, plus there’s a great roof terrace. Don’t overlook the excellent restaurant, specializing in local cuisine.

  • Hotel Francia y Paris, Cádiz

The best choice in this old city. Situated on an inviting plaza, with a handsome exterior and a vast foyer, it’s convenient to all the major sights. Comfortable rooms, some with balconies.

  • This resort is an award-winner, in recognition of its environmentally friendly practices. Located right on the beach, it’s done up in Neo-Moorish style and not far from the fishing village of Conil. Most rooms have balconies and sea views. There’s a choice of restaurants, a pool, spa treatments and sports facilities.

  • This charming hotel typifies the old houses of the Jewish Quarter, with a central patio and an elegant marble entrance replete with antiques and high ceilings. The building was a 16th-century palace, recently converted. Many rooms look onto the patio.

  • This is a small, family-run hotel, set in the mountains, and the emphasis is on relaxation, whether that is reading a book in the library, swimming in the pool or enjoying a glass of Málaga wine. Cycling, horse riding and rambling are also on offer.

  • All rooms have been decorated in a warm and comfortable style, with views of the tropical gardens and a large pool. Room facilities include ADSL and ISDN lines, and many have Jacuzzis.

  • Hotel La Fuente de la Higuera, Ronda

In a renovated olive oil mill, traditional Spanish architecture has met post modern design. Individually designed interiors are detailed down to the last bathroom fitting. All rooms have a garden or terrace.

  • Situated directly across from La Mezquita, this picturesque place offers tremendous value for money. The main patio is a perfect spot to enjoy breakfast each morning. Rooms are clean and serviceable, with nice bathrooms, and all of them overlook the inner courtyard.

  • This 17th-century mansion has been exquisitely converted into an extremely comfortable hotel. Sit in the porticoed inner courtyard or linger in the Baroque family chapel and soak up the age-old ambience.

  • Right in the middle of the Jardines de la Victoria, this highrise is certainly convenient and luxurious, if a bit soulless. The big advantage is off-street parking for those travelling by car.
