Andalucía and Costa del Sol

The diverse and politically semi-autonomous region of Andalucía has a population of some 7 million and embodies what is thought of as typically Spanish – an accurate portrait of the place and its people must include the bullfight, flamenco, gypsies, remote white villages, high sierras and mass tourism on endless stretches of beach. The memories you take with you after a visit here will be colourful, joyous, intense and deeply stirring.

  • A good peña for genuine flamenco.

  • Kasbah, Granada

Relax amid the comforts of this candlelit café. Silky pillows and romantic nooks abound. You can try Arab pastries and a selection of Moroccan teas.

  • One of the “Leading Hotels of the World”, this place is nothing short of magnificent. The style is a whimsical take on Moorish and regional architecture that suits the seaside setting perfectly.

  • This is the largest of the discos on this busy square. The Atlantis room is the best area for banging club tunes.

  • This is a tempting place to come for regional foodstuffs. You’ll find some of the finest olive oils, local and national wines and ham from the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada.

  • Set in a converted mansion, decorated with azulejo tiles. The seasonal menu may feature fish, wild mushrooms or almonds.

  • In Moorish times this was the silk market, although the horseshoe arches and stucco work are a modern re-creation. The narrow alleyways are bursting with colourful wares of every description. Silver jewellery, embroidered silk shawls and ceramics are top buys.

  • Great outdoor seating on the terrace and some delectable seafood delicacies to savour as you watch the hubbub on this busy square.

  • This peña (flamenco club) is named after a flamenco festival held in September.

  • Here the long 1st hole sets the tone for a tough round of golf – the 4th is a trek into the unknown with no view of the green until the third shot.
