Andalucía and Costa del Sol

The diverse and politically semi-autonomous region of Andalucía has a population of some 7 million and embodies what is thought of as typically Spanish – an accurate portrait of the place and its people must include the bullfight, flamenco, gypsies, remote white villages, high sierras and mass tourism on endless stretches of beach. The memories you take with you after a visit here will be colourful, joyous, intense and deeply stirring.

  • The most important edifice here is the 15th-century church of Santa María la Coronada, built over an earlier mosque. The interior features a 15-m (50-ft) high retablo .

  • Mediterráneo, Cádiz

This is the best place in Cádiz to find provincial crafts. There’s an excellent array of practical and decorative ceramics, rugs, blankets, ponchos, candles, jewellery and lots more, all at very affordable prices.

  • The Phoenician’s name for Hercules, whom legend claims to have founded Andalucía.

  • This attractive restaurant is the best for perfect seafood and fish.

  • Something of a local institution. Free tapas come with each glass of fino .

  • Mijas

A lovely hill side village, 15 minutes drive from the centre of Fuengirola. The town has a number of restaurants and beautiful squares with plenty of shops for gifts for family and friends.

  • Bottled water, sin gas (still) or con gas (fizzy), is available, the best being from Lanjarón in Granada Province.

  • The Wild West rides again at this old “spaghetti western” movie set. At show time the kids can see Jesse James reach his ignominious end (see Almería City & Around).

  • Moroccan-style teterías serving mint tea are popping up more and more (see La Tetería del Bañuelo, Granada).

  • With its position at the top of the Albaicín there are views of the Alhambra from the terrace. The food, too, is an adventure in local culture, featuring recipes such as habas con jamón (broad beans with ham).
