  • A complex of restored cave dwellings, each of which preserves their original style. The location provides the perfect setting for rest and relaxation.

  • Another charming cave dwelling, yet with modern comforts. Beautiful views over the city of Guadix and the Sierra Nevada. There’s a pool too.

  • For the price, this place is really rather grand, providing all the services you’d expect of more high-end properties and it’s well located right in the centre of the city. The common areas and rooms are a little spare, but perfectly maintained, and the building has its own garage.

  • Another great location, with a pool overlooked by the La Giralda tower. Furnishings include four-poster beds.

  • El Amparo

This is a small country house hotel, situated within easy reach of Granada, the coast, Antequera and Cordoba. It has beautiful distant views, and is about 10 minutes from the small town of Alhama de Granada. The owners, Sally and Jeff, are warm and welcoming and have a huge amount of local knowledge. If you're energetic, you can swim in their immaculate pool, borrow their mountain bikes (free) or simply walk. Follow up your exercise with a long soak under the stars in the large jacuzzi. The hotel is beautifully designed, and is spotlessly clean. It's one of the friendliest places I've ever stayed at, and my view was clearly shared by the other guests.

  • If you’re in the mood for Moorish opulence, this castle high above the town fits the bill. Elegant and rich furnishings, and a gourmet restaurant too.

  • Grouped around flower-decked patios, this converted farm is a series of comfortable cottages that retain an authentic flavour. Private balconies and gardens grace many of the accommodations, and all around there are orange trees, bougainvillea, wisteria and jasmine perfuming the air.

  • El Fuerte, Marbella

In the centre of Marbella, next to the sea and surrounded by subtropical gardens. Within easy walking distance of the historic quarter too, so that you can discover the “real” Marbella, as well as soak up the glamour.

  • An old Spanish farm has been brilliantly converted. The 11 rooms, most with private terrace, are spacious and refined. Other touches include a pool with a beach, Jacuzzi and sauna, set amid gardens.

  • Set amid green hills, this converted ranch is filled with an eclectic mix of furniture, paintings, pottery and books. Rooms are all distinctive, whether due to hand-painted walls, Oriental hangings, a bathtub with a view, or a fireplace. In spring, the valley below the house is filled with white heather, primroses and the sound of nightingales; summer days can be spent beside the spectacular pool.
