  • Modern double rooms and a sun-terrace make this an acceptable option. Although it is not particularly near to the centre, it’s well connected by public transport.

  • Double rooms, some with adjoining bath, a pool, and lots of recreational options make this an excellent find. It’s just north of the lovely old quarter, where you can see the real Marbella and not just the glitz. Walk through it to get to the beach and the port.

  • This historic palace, erected by the eponymous king to house royals and other dignitaries during the 1929 Exposition, is suitably sumptuous. Unfortunately, it’s now part of a US chain, whose management just doesn’t seem as au fait with the subtleties of European-style luxury. Still, it remains popular and is definitely worth a stroll-through to have a look.

  • Hotel Amadeus

An 18th century manor house with 14 uniquely designed rooms, located in the centre of Seville.

  • Welcome to 400 years of luxury. With unparalleled style and tranquillity, this 16th-century palace has been lovingly converted into a hotel, now joined to the exclusive Relais & Châteaux chain. Patios with lush plantings and the soothing sound of fountains, grand drawing rooms and exquisite decor create an opulent atmosphere.

  • Hotel Casa Grande is a charming place to stay in the historical centre of Jerez; family rooms from £95.

  • Hotel Casa Imperial

This luxurious choice in the Barrío de Santa Cruz provides a memorable stay. It’s a converted 16th-century palace, set among a series of patios. Many rooms have sunken baths and all are uniquely decorated in the very finest taste, loaded with antiques. Included is the use of a nearby gym and pool.

  • This 15th-century mansion makes a peaceful choice in a central location. The original features have been wonderfully preserved, such as the Mudéjar ceiling. Every room is decorated with period accents according to modern standards, with views of the Albaicín, the Alhambra or the courtyard.

  • Near the Alameda de Hercules, many of the rooms here face a patio and fountain. The decor is a mix of Moorish styles.

  • This wonderful period building has preserved its atmospheric cloisters and charm, right in the heart of this captivating town. Most of the rooms have views of the castle, plus there’s a great roof terrace. Don’t overlook the excellent restaurant, specializing in local cuisine.
