Top 10 Costa del Sol Golf Courses

1. Valderrama
Of the 60-odd golf clubs along the Costa, this is the most famous – it hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997. A Robert Trent Jones masterpiece and rated number one in continental Europe.

2. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
Royal Sotogrande opened in 1964 and is still one of Europe’s top 10 courses. Green-fee-paying visitors are welcome if they book in advance. The Robert Trent Jones design features mature trees and plenty of water obstacles.

3. San Roque
Opened in 1990, San Roque is a Dave Thomas design. The course has been planned so that the holes are located in the same direction as the prevailing wind.

4. Real Club Las Brisas
Las Brisas is recognized as one of the finest courses in Europe. Also designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1968, it has hosted the World Cup on two occasions and the Spanish Open three times. It features raised greens, numerous sand traps and water features.

5. Alcaidesa Links
The only links course in Spain opened in 1992, designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark.

6. Golf El Paraíso
This British-style golf club was designed by Gary Player.

7. Los Arqueros
This was the Costa’s first course to be designed by Spanish champ Seve Ballesteros. It offers a stiff test even for professionals.

8. Miraflores
Designed by Folco Nardi, Miraflores has many challenging holes.

9. La Duquesa
A Trent Jones design. The front nine holes begin in a westerly direction then finish with a long par five.

10. La Cañada
Here the long 1st hole sets the tone for a tough round of golf – the 4th is a trek into the unknown with no view of the green until the third shot.
