  • 1. Valderrama

Of the 60-odd golf clubs along the Costa, this is the most famous – it hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997. A Robert Trent Jones masterpiece and rated number one in continental Europe.

  • 2. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande

Royal Sotogrande opened in 1964 and is still one of Europe’s top 10 courses. Green-fee-paying visitors are welcome if they book in advance. The Robert Trent Jones design features mature trees and plenty of water obstacles.

  • 3. San Roque

Opened in 1990, San Roque is a Dave Thomas design. The course has been planned so that the holes are located in the same direction as the prevailing wind.

  • 4. Real Club Las Brisas

Las Brisas is recognized as one of the finest courses in Europe. Also designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1968, it has hosted the World Cup on two occasions and the Spanish Open three times. It features raised greens, numerous sand traps and water features.

  • 5. Alcaidesa Links

The only links course in Spain opened in 1992, designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark.

  • 6. Golf El Paraíso

This British-style golf club was designed by Gary Player.

  • 7. Los Arqueros

This was the Costa’s first course to be designed by Spanish champ Seve Ballesteros. It offers a stiff test even for professionals.

  • 8. Miraflores

Designed by Folco Nardi, Miraflores has many challenging holes.

  • 9. La Duquesa

A Trent Jones design. The front nine holes begin in a westerly direction then finish with a long par five.

  • 10. La Cañada

Here the long 1st hole sets the tone for a tough round of golf – the 4th is a trek into the unknown with no view of the green until the third shot.
