The diverse and politically semi-autonomous region of Andalucía has a population of some 7 million and embodies what is thought of as typically Spanish – an accurate portrait of the place and its people must include the bullfight, flamenco, gypsies, remote white villages, high sierras and mass tourism on endless stretches of beach. The memories you take with you after a visit here will be colourful, joyous, intense and deeply stirring.

-
A lovely shop where you can buy souvenirs decorated with original pictures of Albayzin and Sacromonte.
-
Delightful restaurant in the quiet mountain village of Gualchos. Friendly staff, excellent food at reasonable prices - although note this is a proper restaurant not a tapas bar. If the weather is good you can sit out on a patio and overlook the Mediterranean.
-
A lovely hill side village, 15 minutes drive from the centre of Fuengirola. The town has a number of restaurants and beautiful squares with plenty of shops for gifts for family and friends.

Most visitors to Granada miss this hidden gem. The monastery was founded by the Catholic Monarchs and given to the Hieronymite order. Inside, is a peaceful cloister, filled with citrus trees and the scent of jasmine. If you walk round anti-clockwise, you visit the refectory, chapel and sacristy, which are all quite simply decorated with whitewashed walls and wooden ceilings. But behind the final door is a real surprise. The Duchess of Sesa acquired the rights to use the church as her family vault and her architects transformed the place into a riot of painting and mouldings, with a gilded altarpiece. When I visited, a recording of baroque music was playing, adding to the atmosphere.
Admission is €3.50. The monastery is open from 10.00 a.m to 2.30 p.m and 4.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. (afternoon times are one hour earlier in winter).

Beautiful decoration. Reformed and modern. Friendly atmosphere. Even the Royal Family have eaten there.

a very nice and unpretentious fish restaurant in the fishing harbour of Marbella.

the hotel is in central granada. you can even get a bus from the airport which stops very close by. it has a swimming pool on the roof, and also a bar and restarant. here, you can sit and see great views of the mountains and also alhambra, in all it's beauty. the glass lifts are on the outside of this building, again with views as you ascend. the food is excellent and i would recommend a stay.

You can't leave the region without buying some of the local sherry.
Sherry’s distinctive flavour is traditionally attributed to the rare white albariza soils found around the mouth of the River Guadalquivir, and real sherry is only produced in Jerez and nearby towns like Salucar de Barrameda, Chipiona and Puerto de Santa Maria. Large-scale production has always been associated with Britain, hence the English names of many of Jerez’s sherry barons and their bodegas. Heavier sherries like olorosos and amontillados have traditionally been mainly for export, with locals preferring the lighter, dry finos.
