Athens

Athens is simultaneously known as the Classical, marble-pillared cradle of Western civilization and as a modern urban sprawl of concrete and traffic. Between the extremes lies a kaleidoscopic city, where the influences of East and West entwine in the markets, cafés and tavernas, built upon ancient ruins and rubbing shoulders with gold-leafed Byzantine churches.

  • Former chef at Vardis, Franco-Cretan Jean de Grylleau has brought his talents to a new address. Dishes like soy-citrus marinated sea bream with cold tagliatelle are refined but bursting with flavour, and an excellent wine list boasts the best from Greece and France.

  • Bee buzzes with an arty, mixed gay-and-straight crowd who come for the funky decor, excellent food and friendly vibe.

  • In a Neo-Classical town house overlooking Keramikos, four large exhibition rooms display Islamic ceramics, metalwork, woodcarvings, glassware and textiles.

  • Benaki Museum

The Benaki is one of Greece’s preeminent museums, not only for its extensive and top-notch collection of prehistoric to 20th-century Greek art, but also because it’s a lovely place to be. Among its highlights are the re-creations of Ottoman-style sitting rooms in 18th-century northern Greek mansions, and sumptuous Byzantine shrines. The superb books and jewellery in the gift shop and the rooftop garden restaurant are destinations in themselves. (see Benaki Museum, Museums - Benaki Museum)

  • A first-rate collection of Greek art from Neolithic to present times. It is housed in a beautifully renovated Neo-Classical mansion, with an intriguing history and famed rooftop view. (see Benaki Museum)

  • Follow the progress of Greek art and culture through this first-rate collection from the eras of antiquity to the mid-20th century. Walk through excellently presented displays in the gorgeous Neo-Classical mansion of the Benaki family. (see Benaki Museum)

  • One of Athens’ premiere galleries, Bernier/Eliades exhibits more international artists than any other in Athens, plus top Greek artists.

  • This estate agent specializes in short-term leases on furnished apartments all over Athens – an especially good option for scholars or business-people looking to stay more than a month or two.

  • Bettina’s impressive stock includes international labels alongside Greece’s own Angelos Frentzos and Sophia Kokosalaki.

  • The Acropolis was first inhabited in Neolithic times (around 3000 BC), and began to take on the form of a city when it was fortified by the Mycenaeans (inhabitants of the southeastern Greek mainland) in about 1400 BC.
