Athens

Athens is simultaneously known as the Classical, marble-pillared cradle of Western civilization and as a modern urban sprawl of concrete and traffic. Between the extremes lies a kaleidoscopic city, where the influences of East and West entwine in the markets, cafés and tavernas, built upon ancient ruins and rubbing shoulders with gold-leafed Byzantine churches.

  • Spectacular views directly across to the temples of the Acropolis or to Piraeus and the coast. (see Filopappos Monument)

  • Take a contemplative walk through the wide, overgrown rows of handsome mausoleums in Athens’ largest cemetery. It is thickly planted with cypress trees, whose tall, pointed shape Greeks believe helps guide souls up to heaven.

  • Before World War II, this area was the centre of Athens’ thriving Jewish community. The synagogue is the oldest in Athens. Across the street, Beth-Salom Synagogue is now Athens’ main community synagogue.

  • Flower Market

Great bunches of colourful flowers sold around the church of St Irene. A good place to take pictures.

  • This is an outpost of the Museum of Greek Folk Art (see Museum of Greek Folk Art), housed in an 18th-century mosque. The museum’s extensive collection includes rich, colourful ceramics, sculpture and decorative folk objects from all over Greece and Asia Minor. Most of the exhibits are made from terracotta or the gleaming faïence that was favoured by the ancient Minoans.

  • Attractive, high-quality and affordably priced watches, necklaces, bracelets, bags and other accessories.

  • Healthy home cooking and a cosy atmosphere make this tiny eatery a firm favourite for both lunch and informal supper. Limited seating.

  • Ultra-cool lounge bar and restaurant. The all-white summer garden is set in a peaceful park; across the road the indoor area has designer furniture and abstract art.

  • Spicy Asia-minor flavoured treats in leafy Kifissia.

  • Nescafé, milk and cold water whipped into a pleasant, cool froth.
