Athens

Athens is simultaneously known as the Classical, marble-pillared cradle of Western civilization and as a modern urban sprawl of concrete and traffic. Between the extremes lies a kaleidoscopic city, where the influences of East and West entwine in the markets, cafés and tavernas, built upon ancient ruins and rubbing shoulders with gold-leafed Byzantine churches.

  • A painting made directly into wet plaster, creating art that is one with walls.

  • Close to the gritty Central Market, Fresh brings designer chic to downtown Athens. The 133 rooms have minimalist furniture in vivid oranges, pinks and greens. There is a rooftop café with a small pool.

  • One of Athens’ most vital fruit ‘n’ veg markets.

  • The horizontal band running below the pediment of a temple, carved with floral, geometric or other decorative motifs.

  • A new, well-run museum of over 3,000 works of top post-war Greek and European artists.

  • In recent years, the Greek wine industry has been gaining international acclaim, finally bringing serious cultivation techniques to its sun-drenched soils and indigenous grapes. Gaia is one of the best new vineyards, producing deep velvety wines from Nemea’s Aghiorghitiko red grapes.

  • Stop by this small, cosy spot on a rainy night. The elaborate antique mirrors, old jukebox, huge selection of teas and crackling woodstove will keep you warm.

  • Galaxidi

Pretty Galaxidi is a chic but low-key resort on the Gulf of Corinth that makes a great coastal base for visiting Delphi. Its location between turquoise waters and green mountains makes it tranquil and idyllic, except on summer weekends when Athens’ fashionable crowds pack the trendy cafés. Otherwise, take the time to explore its good beaches and 19th-century mansions.

  • Gemista simply means “stuffed”. Greeks stuff tomatoes, aubergines, courgettes (zucchini), peppers and vine leaves with all manner of ingredients, including rice, herbs, mince, raisins, pine nuts and an array of spices. Often topped with a creamy, lemony sauce, gemista make a fulfilling meal on their own.

  • This library of multilingual volumes is among the world’s best for all subjects Hellenistic.
