Athens

Athens is simultaneously known as the Classical, marble-pillared cradle of Western civilization and as a modern urban sprawl of concrete and traffic. Between the extremes lies a kaleidoscopic city, where the influences of East and West entwine in the markets, cafés and tavernas, built upon ancient ruins and rubbing shoulders with gold-leafed Byzantine churches.

  • Greece is famous for its leather goods, and no one designs them better than talented young Lena Katsanidou. Her sought-after heavy hide belts, breathtaking (literally) corsets and directional bags all from the softest, quality skins are available from the designer’s funky Kolonaki boutique, along with her signature one-shoulder satin tops, inspirational jewellery and a whole host of one-off high-fashion garments.

  • A popular place for actors as well as audience to stop on the way to or from performances at the ancient theatre. Good pork chops and stuffed vine leaves, and a nice garden at the back.

  • One of the oldest archaeological sites in Greece, with remains dating back to the fourth millennium BC.

  • An all-glass boutique designer hotel with 30 rooms, studios and suites set in a garden with trees and a pool. The modern, minimalist furnishing is complemented by earthy colours (cream, coffee, grey and beige) and atmospheric lighting. Facilities include the Ananea Health and Spa.

  • Limeni Village

"Limeni Village" consists of 16 towers tied up as rooms, providing all the necessary for a pleasant stay. Sky and water are mixed together like one. Unforgetable vacations!

  • Loumidis

The oldest remaining coffee roaster in Greece. This caffeine-fancier’s paradise stocks a wealth of traditional Greek and Turkish coffees, plus all the paraphernalia necessary for its preparation. It also sells a range of beans from around the world, as well as espresso machines, cups, shakers and all the accoutrements one could possibly desire for that perfect cup of coffee. (see Loumidis)

  • This vast corner coffee shop specializes in the traditional Greek/Turkish brew, selling a selection of brikia in which to boil it, cups and saucers, and sweet treats.

  • Loutraki

Famed for its spring waters, Loutraki is a popular Athenian weekend destination. The top draw is the Hydrotherapy Thermal Spa, though the area is also home to a casino that’s said to be one of the biggest in Europe.

  • Much hyped bar-restaurant with loud music, young clientele, and 1970s’ interior of white plastic furniture with splashes of vibrant red.

  • Lykavittos Festival (Jun–Sep)

Top music acts such as Bob Dylan, Phillip Glass and BB King perform in the theatre nestled at the steep peak of Lykavittos Hill.
