Athens

Athens is simultaneously known as the Classical, marble-pillared cradle of Western civilization and as a modern urban sprawl of concrete and traffic. Between the extremes lies a kaleidoscopic city, where the influences of East and West entwine in the markets, cafés and tavernas, built upon ancient ruins and rubbing shoulders with gold-leafed Byzantine churches.

  • A rather limited but heavenly selection of fresh seafood including whitebait, mullet, bream and shrimps.

  • “La Divina”, born Maria Kalogeropoulos, was the original diva. The fiery first lady of opera enraged many managers at La Scala and the Metropolitan with her temperamental whims, but seduced millions, including shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, with her heavenly soprano and unforgettable gaze.

  • Sit out on the pavement at this traditional, low-profile taverna and enjoy simple and delicious Greek cuisine. Don’t miss the delectable kolokithokeftedes (courgette fritters).

  • Everything horsey was here, with stables for 300 horses. Construction on this centre was delayed when archaeologists uncovered a shrine to goddess Aphrodite. Post Games there are plans to build an 18- hole golf course on the site.

  • Martinos Antiques

A legend in the Greek antiques market, this three-floor shop gathers furniture, gold and silver, paintings, carpets, books and ornaments from all over the world.

  • It means “black laurel”. The best grapes for this rich, dark, port-like sweet wine come from the Peloponnese.

  • Everything’s made from the market wares of the day, and it’s open ’til dawn. Clubbers head here after long nights.

  • The gaze of this snake-headed gorgon turned men to stone. Perseus defeated her only with the help of Athena’s gleaming shield, in which he could safely see his foe.

  • Fantastic acoustics for the world’s best orchestras, ballets and opera companies.

  • Melina

This pink-and-gilt shrine to late Greek actress and national heroine Melina Mercouri was once her favourite café.
