  • Bypass other tavernas lining the port and head to the end of the bay and this favourite of the Athenian cognoscenti. Enjoy the view over a poikilia (mixed plate) of fresh seafood and veggie treats.

  • Ritzy Athenians don’t mind driving well over an hour out of the city to reach this beautiful seaside club. The Mediterranean fusion food and sushi are only part of it – stay on to enjoy the late-night dancing.

  • Elaborate cuisine and glitzy clientele in a wood-and-glass building built into a cliff overlooking the sea. Mainly fish but also a decent choice of meat dishes.

  • Top-notch taramasalata and fresh grilled seafood (the squid is especially good) at this garden taverna by the sea.

  • Located near the fish market, you can always be sure there will be good seafood here, accompanied by ouzo.

  • Light, creative Mediterranean cuisine in a lovely courtyard. The focus is on seafood, but don’t miss the delicious pears poached in wine for dessert.

  • Dull surrounds but probably the widest variety of fresh fish on the island.

  • Syrtaki, nr Sounio

The most popular taverna around Sounio, and with good reason. The shaded three-storey seating area has a nice view of the sea, and spit-cooked beef and fresh octopus are reliably tasty.

  • Simple taverna serving such delights as a mouth-watering roasted baby pork and kolokeftedes (fried courgette balls).

  • This coastal fish taverna has great starters, including a nice, light taramasalata – but save room for the grilled fish.
