  • Lined with cafés, bars and hipsters, this street feels both old-world and fresh, and bustles day and night.

  • Much of the ancient site has been destroyed, but archaeology fanatics will still want to see the Sanctuary of Poseidon and the stadium that hosted the Panhellenic Games.

  • This showpiece in central Athens was built in the 4th century BC for the Panathenaic Games. It later fell into disuse, but was restored with beautiful Pentelic marble for the first modern Olympics in 1896. In 2004, it hosted archery and the Marathon finish.

  • Kekhries

    The site where Theseus defeated the Sinis, the giant who used whole pine trees to slingshot victims across the water. Today the seaside town makes a nice stop on the beautiful drive to Epidauros.

  • This is a simple, classic taverna dish, whose name means “red-sauced”. Lamb, chicken or pork is cooked with tomatoes, wine and herbs in a clay pot, which keeps in all the moisture and pungent flavour. The tender, infused meat should fall off the bone at the mere touch of a fork.

  • New EU food laws have made this essential Easter dish technically illegal, but in back gardens and old-time tavernas Greeks continue to serve it year round. They take the intestines of lamb, marinate them in herbs, garlic and lemon juice, and roast the whole thing for hours over coals, until it drips with flavourful juices.

  • One of the oldest archaeological sites in Greece, with remains dating back to the fourth millennium BC.

  • Loutraki

    Famed for its spring waters, Loutraki is a popular Athenian weekend destination. The top draw is the Hydrotherapy Thermal Spa, though the area is also home to a casino that’s said to be one of the biggest in Europe.

  • Everything horsey was here, with stables for 300 horses. Construction on this centre was delayed when archaeologists uncovered a shrine to goddess Aphrodite. Post Games there are plans to build an 18- hole golf course on the site.

  • It means “black laurel”. The best grapes for this rich, dark, port-like sweet wine come from the Peloponnese.
