  • Corinth doesn’t have much going for it in the way of restaurants, but Theodorakis does a decent job with seafood, especially sardines and calamari.

  • Taverna Paleo Archontiko

Housed in an old mansion, this family-run favourite is usually packed with locals. Nafpliotes go for the excellent rooster cooked in wine, pork stew or rabbit with tomato sauce.

  • This waterfront taverna makes a good stop after a day of swimming. Feast on large plates of cheap, tasty local seafood.

  • Hipsters and locals flock to this pleasant, family-owned mezedopoleion. It has a cosy, wood-beamed interior that’s ideal for winter and a courtyard for lazy summer nights.

  • Taverna Vakhos

Though Delphi’s sites and scenery are fantastic, the same cannot be said for its culinary offerings. This family-run establishment is the exception. It cooks good taverna fare accompanied by views across the Corinthian Gulf.

  • Athens’ most famous souvlaki joint has been serving up hot, juicy, thinly sliced beef, slathered with cool garlicky tzatziki, wrapped in tender pittas, since the 19th century.

  • Hidden away in an arcade in Kolonaki’s heart, this eatery is renowned for its traditional mezes, fresh fish and impressive collection of spirits.

  • The old-world atmosphere – all potted palms, portraits and pink swags – might almost distract you entirely from the prime reason for coming here: the spectacular pastries and mountain teas.

  • The menu at Athens’ top fish restaurant changes daily depending on what the sea brings forth. Sleek modern wood-and-glass interior.

  • Relocated from Piraeus to Gazi in 2005, To Varoulko is widely acknowledged for serving the best seafood in Athens. Chef Lefteris Lazarou has been awarded a Michelin star. (see To Varoulko)
