  • A firm favourite with former president Constantine Karamanlis. Try the stuffed cabbage leaves and yiouvetsi (pasta with roasted meat), washed down with barrel retsina.

  • Sit by the church and sample a wonderful array of seasonal seafood, raw or fried with cheese.

  • Flavourful taverna classics in a rather fancy room with gilded chandeliers. In spring, be sure to try the fried courgette (zucchini) flowers. Year round, sample the fromila (barbecued cheese).

  • A simple, traditional, delicious taverna. Be sure to try the spicy Arachova sausage and stuffed peppers.

  • Cumin-flavoured keftedes (meatballs) and tzatziki in a place that steps back in time.

  • Top-notch taramasalata and fresh grilled seafood (the squid is especially good) at this garden taverna by the sea.

  • The original and best of the city’s now plentiful sushi restaurants. An impeccably presented, tempting selection.

  • Serves innovative food in style. Try the smoked salmon with whisky. Plous Podilato is a sister restaurant in Piraeus (see Plous Podilato).

  • Klepsydra

This tiny, quiet bar-café behind the Tower of the Winds is surrounded by flower pots and pastel-hued buildings. Locals love it as it’s nicely tucked away.

  • In a grey, seedy part of Omonia stands this warm, old-world taverna. The floors are painted red, the wine barrels decorated with vibrant flowers.
