  • The only campsite in the Athens area and thus the cheapest sleep around. But it’s located in a depressing strip off a busy highway well over an hour outside the city. Head here as a last resort when you’re completely strapped for cash.

  • Located just steps away from the bustle of Syntagma and the top-notch shopping of Ermou, the Cypria’s recently renovated rooms are clean and comfortable, if a little bland and uniform. A hefty breakfast buffet offers hot and cold dishes until 10am.

  • The location is central, if a little seedy, but the super-cheap dorm beds are in immaculate, quiet rooms (a real achievement in this part of town), and the staff are glad to help you. Facilities include laundry and a kitchen for guests.

  • Overlooking the lush greenery of Pedion Areos Park, this smart hotel has 152 rooms and suites decorated in subtle muted hues, each with a grey marble bathroom. Rooftop pool and fitness centre.

  • This estate agent specializes in short-term leases on furnished apartments all over Athens – an especially good option for scholars or business-people looking to stay more than a month or two.

  • The entire hotel is suites and apartments, a convenience for the long-stay guest. The accommodation is pleasant, simple rather than luxurious and the bathrooms employ a distinct economy of scale. The location is Athens’ southernmost suburb – great for clean air, nearby beaches and summer clubs, but a bit of a slog to reach the city centre.

  • Located in a quiet residential neighbourhood in the wealthy southern suburb of Glyfada, this hotel offers one and two bedroom apartments with full kitchens and access to all hotel services, including business facilities. The hotel is close to the beach and surrounded by gardens.

  • This hotel in a former sponge factory is one of the most charming places to stay in all of Greece. The quaint rooms and flower-filled courtyard are lovely, though some regulars say that service has dipped a little.

  • Just down the street from the Attalos, in the same colourful-cum-seedy district. Quite a different interior, though, in this renovated Neo-Classical mansion, with polished wood floors, high moulded ceilings and bright, cosy furnishings. Still fairly basic, but a cheerful atmosphere prevails.

  • Located on a bay near the site of Vavrona, this new Club Med offers the all-inclusive package of activities and fun for which the chain is known. Its standout feature is an indoor marble pool and spa with a starry-night ceiling.
