  • The rooms in this 19th-century mansion are simple but elegant; however, the real draw is the combination of a courtyard garden overflowing with fragrant flowers, the sumptuous breakfasts and the warm hospitality of the Italian owners.

  • With its marble lobby, oriental carpets and glittering chandeliers, this grandiose establishment exudes timeless luxury. The opulence continues through 327 rooms and suites, a rooftop restaurant and pool, and the fitness centre.

  • A slightly more up-market, but still very affordable, Delphi option. Rooms are cosy, rustic and spotless, and the fireplace in the lounge feels great during snowy winters (the peak season).

  • Hotel Parnassos

A good budget option just outside the mountain village of Arachova. There is one bathroom for every two of the spare but clean rooms. No A/C, but Mount Parnassos rarely gets hot enough to need it.

  • In the smart northern suburb of Kifissia, this charming 1920s’ building is set in peaceful gardens with a swimming pool. Each of the 30 rooms and 14 suites is individually styled. And then there’s the superb Vardis restaurant.

  • This hotel is great value for its unbeatable location between Plaka and the shopping street of Ermou, and for its warm and simple but stylish rooms. The roof garden looks out to the Acropolis.

  • The best thing about the Tempi is its wonderful location on a central but quiet pedestrian street, overlooking a church, the Monastiraki flower market and the Acropolis. Rooms are rock-bottom basic, but the family running the hotel are helpful and can also arrange city tours.

  • This is a good budget option in Delphi. Rooms are cheap, clean and nicely furnished, and the owners are friendly.

  • Excellent value. The Rooms and services are much nicer and more modern than you might expect from the budget bracket, and guests have high praise for the helpful, friendly service. Though not in a tourist neighbourhood, it’s still an easy walk to several sights and good restaurants.

  • Another perfectly central location for this small, friendly, family-run guesthouse. Despite its low prices, the old-fashioned rooms still have basic amenities and comforts, including the welcome respite of air conditioning.
