  • This grandiose hotel and former retreat of the rich and famous reopened in 2004 after a 14-year closure. The 104 rooms and suites, all with marble bathrooms, are individually furnished with select antiques.

  • Similarly turned out sibling of the Jason Inn, so rooms are stylish as well as clean and comfortable. The bar and restaurant are cheerful and pleasant, thankfully, as the run-down neighbourhood doesn’t offer much in the way of sustenance.

  • This two-storey Neo-Classical building with delightfully painted ceilings is located near the centre of old Nafplio. Comfortable rooms come in several sizes, and breakfast includes home-baked goodies.

  • Friendly, helpful staff and equally appealing rooms, decorated in warm hues, with nice touches like goosedown duvets and marble bathrooms. The Polynesian Kona Kai restaurant is highly rated and a favourite of business diners.

  • An all-glass boutique designer hotel with 30 rooms, studios and suites set in a garden with trees and a pool. The modern, minimalist furnishing is complemented by earthy colours (cream, coffee, grey and beige) and atmospheric lighting. Facilities include the Ananea Health and Spa.

  • Marble House Pension

A favourite of students and artists, Marble House has clean, simple rooms and a friendly attitude. It offers discounted tours and monthly rates in the off season. Guests pay extra for air conditioning and private bath.

  • Ever popular with executive travellers for its full range of business facilities, 24-hour restaurant and well-appointed rooms – plus extras like free sessions with a personal trainer in the gym. There’s a free hourly shuttle to the city centre.

  • Nafplio’s nicest hotel was undergoing renovations at the time of writing. New decorative touches will include large, wood-and-marble rooms. What won’t change is its un-beatable location on the hill of Acronafplia, within the ancient fortress walls.

  • Smack in the centre of town, this hotel has big, beautiful designer rooms with marble bathrooms, massage showers, Bulgari toiletries, a famously elegant lobby and a 24-hour business centre. Rooms on the eighth and ninth floors have great views of the Acropolis.

  • Another of the many apartment-only hotels in the wealthy southern suburbs. Most of the two-room apartments with kitchenettes have sea views; those that don’t overlook the hotel’s best advantage, a garden courtyard with a pool and Jacuzzi. All are served by full hotel amenities, including extras like childcare.
