  • This bright, modern, stylish hotel, run by the Grecotel chain, is one of the projects aimed at sprucing up Plateia Omonia. So far, it has gained a good name for the hip decor, comfortable rooms and friendly staff.

  • Most of these one- and two-bedroom apartments are quite luxurious, fitted out with antiques, chandeliers and views of the Saronic Gulf. In addition to a pool, Jacuzzi and business facilities, there are also well appointed public spaces and a garden.

  • If this pretty pension is full, the owners can find rooms for you in one of their other small hotels around town. Within the pension, the accommodation varies – not all rooms have private bathrooms or air conditioning, but the pricing reflects this fairly. Many options are very pleasant, including rooms with colourfully painted wooden floors and wrought-iron beds.

  • Representing a great deal for its bulls-eye central location, Phivos is the newest city-centre addition to Athens’ collection of hostels. The hostel is run by a very friendly and helpful owner, and all the rooms come with bathrooms and air conditioning.

  • Poseidon Resort

This resort has a small private beach and extensive gardens, as well as sports, spa and conference facilities. Accommodation varies widely in size, style and luxury, from individual rooms to villas. The spruced-up bungalows are best, with their shiny wooden floors and cotton canopies.

  • This is a full-service hotel that rents almost exclusively by the month. Comfortable rooms have most amenities, but no long-stay extras like kitchenettes or living areas.

  • Orange, pink and limegreen predominate in this funky 52-room hotel designed by Karim Rashid. There’s a heated outdoor pool and a fitness and beauty centre. An everchanging selection of contemporary art is displayed in the lobby.

  • Sofitel shatters the perception that airport hotels must be bland. Soundproof rooms are elegant, sophisticated, and packed with amenities. Business and conference facilities are among the best in Greece, and the glassed-in rooftop pool has fascinating runway views.

  • St George Lycabettus

A chic 157-room hotel, built into the pine-scented slopes of Lykavittos Hill. Full use is made of the rooftop, with an excellent restaurant, a swimming pool and a bar sharing the views. A minibus service will whisk you to Plateia Syntagma.

  • Student and Travellers’ Inn

This spotless, cheerful, recently renovated hostel is located in a pretty quarter of Plaka, an easy walk from most sights and downtown. Private rooms and dorms have wooden floors, big windows and private phones with internet access. Bathrooms are shared, but each bedroom has its own sink and mirror.
