  • A fixture on the international backpacking circuit for years. Rooms are spare but well kept, prices are cheap, the staff is young and friendly and the small outdoor bar is in the centre of lively, student-filled Plateia Exarcheia.

  • This property promotion group helps visitors find holiday rentals and timeshares for varying periods all over Athens.

  • Having undergone massive refurbishment in 2003, Athens Hilton is typically smart, functional and modern. Ample facilities include six restaurants, two bars (one on the rooftop), a swimming pool and health centre, plus extensive conference amenities.

  • A 5-minute walk from Vouliagmeni beach, this gem of a hotel comprises 110 rooms and 11 suites, decorated in warm hues, with 19th-century antiques and marble bathrooms. The lounge bar is where guests relax in the evenings on poolside sofas.

  • One of the best spas in Greece, the Thermae Sylla offers treatments in Evia’s restorative mineral-laden spring waters, along with a wide array of beauty and relaxation treatments. The beautiful external architecture has been preserved, but rooms and treatment areas are fully modern.

  • Capacious rooms and bathrooms for this price bracket, and the hotel’s in a central location too. However, though close to the sights, bear in mind that this is the gritty, rather than glamorous, end of central Athens.

  • These studios are smaller than many hotel rooms, and the cold tile floors don’t lend themselves to a homely feel. However, they are new and clean, offering well-fitted bathrooms and kitchenettes, large balconies and a short walk to the Acropolis.

  • Comfortable, classic rooms with wooden accents have a wonderful view of the olive groves descending below Delphi. There is also an indoor pool and full gym and fitness club. This is one of the few hotels in Greece where pets are welcome.

  • Far from the sights and the buzz of the city centre, but prices for dorm beds can’t be beaten. This is the headquarters of the Greek Association of Youth Hostels, an organization that can help you find cheap accommodation throughout the country.

  • A good place for a night or two on a tight budget. Tiny, clean rooms and dorm beds on a noisy street in an area that’s run down but close to the centre. Pluses are a welcoming staff who speak perfect English, and large bathrooms.
