  • 1. Bahar

The whole area around the central meat market teems with old, family-run shops selling traditional foodstuffs. Bahar is one of the best-known for herbs.

  • 2. Palaiopoleio Alexandros

You never know what you might unearth among the books, ornaments and moth-eaten clothing piled up in this potential treasure trove.

  • 3. Athens’ Flea Market

Everything under the sun, from ancient coins to fake designer sunglasses, frilly knickers and antiques at rock-bottom prices (see Athens’ Flea Market).

  • 4. Katerina

This tiny alcove manages to stock a fine selection of traditional wooden tavli (backgammon) boards. Prices from as low as €10.

  • 5. Boots & Belts

This shop appears at first to be a wardrobe store for wannabe Hell’s Angels. But take in your favourite jeans and the owner, Pantelis, will make you an exact replica in leather for only €300.

  • 6. Spiliopoulos

Creations by top shoe designers for as little as half the normal retail price. How can they be so cheap? These shoes are either seconds (usually with no visible flaw) or one-off experimental lines.

  • 7. Stavros Melissinos (the Poet Sandalmaker)

This smiling figure opened his shop of lasting, handmade leather sandals in 1954, has expanded the original few styles, and has become a tourist attraction in his own right.

  • 8. Martinos Antiques

A legend in the Greek antiques market, this three-floor shop gathers furniture, gold and silver, paintings, carpets, books and ornaments from all over the world.

  • 9. Aristokratikon

Using only the finest Greek ingredients, freshly handmade every day, these chocolates are strictly for connoisseurs.

  • 10. Kalyviotis

Thread and fabric, bead- and button-filled shops populate the area around Ermou and Perikleous. Kalyviotis is the best one-stop haberdashery.
