  • One of Athens’ oldest and best-loved live music clubs, showcasing rock and alternative bands. Rave parties after 1am.

  • The bland decor belies the wild scenes that come to life after 2am. One of the few rembetatika to draw a primarily young, hip crowd with its gypsy blues.

  • Greek alternative music kids and hipsters flock here to dance to the likes of Scotland’s Belle & Sebastian and Australia’s prince of darkness, Nick Cave.

  • A dark and smoky rembetika den upstairs: allnight souvlaki joint under the same name can be found on the ground floor.

  • A great little jazz and blues cabaret that for 20 years has attracted some of the best names in the business to its small stage, draped with plush red curtains.

  • Rembetiki Istoria

The original moulded walls and ceilings of this favourite bar, tucked into an early 20th-century building, are a nice contrast with the earthy music.

  • This converted cinema is an institution in Athens’ thriving rock scene. Iggy Pop, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Metallica and many in between have graced the stage.

  • Tacky decor and overpriced drinks, but there’s no denying the enthusiasm of the crowds of Greeks swaying to their favourite songs.

  • Athens’ premiere rembetatiko, open day and night. Old-timers with cigars shower musicians with flowers, and, when the mood strikes, dance to gritty songs of heartbreak. Reserve on Friday and Saturday.

  • Most of Greece’s greatest rembetatika musicians have played here, and the atmosphere retains something of a bygone age.
