  • 1. O Platanos

Amid Plaka’s tourist traps, O Platanos’s tender, aromatic lamb, fresh horta (wild greens) and home-made retsina have been classics since 1932. In summer, eat under the giant plane tree.

  • 2. Eden

Greece’s first vegetarian restaurant opened in 1982 and is still a haven for herbivores. The atmosphere is refreshingly bright and nonhippie.

  • 3. Scholiarhio

Though somewhat touristy these days, this ouzeri still radiates character. Pick from the daily offerings on a tray.

  • 4. Elliniki Etairia

At this elegant lunchtime stop, the dining room showcases ancient finds, and offers three different, beautifully prepared dishes daily.

  • 5. Bakaliarakia tou Damigou

The name means “codfish”, which this local favourite has been serving up, with strong garlic sauce, for 140 years.

  • 6. Daphne’s

If there’s a celebrity in town, they’re sure to eat in the frescoed dining room of this Neo-Classical mansion.

  • 7. Symposio

Beautiful regional food from northwestern Epirus, most of it raised on the owner’s farm. (see Symposio)

  • 8. Strofi

The rooftop view is fantastic, the food a cut above typical taverna fare, and the crowd often filled with theatre types from the nearby Herodes Atticus.

  • 9. Edodi

The food is superb, unfortunately the space is limited and reservations essential. (see Edodi)

  • 10. Psaras

This established, pretty taverna has tables on the whitewashed steps leading to the Acropolis. Try the soupes (cuttlefish).
