  • 1. Zappeion

    The 19th-century Zappeion stands in pleasant grounds at the southern end of the National Gardens. Its tree-lined paths are open to the public, while the Zappeion itself hosts international conferences.

  • 2. Presidential Palace and Maximou Mansion

    The former palace of King Constantine was designed by Ernst Ziller (see Syntagma and Kolonaki). Next door, Maximou is the Prime Minister’s official residence – though present incumbent Costas Simitis prefers his Kolonaki apartment.

  • 3. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

    A dying soldier, carved in 1930 on the wall in front of the Parliament, commemorates Greece’s war dead since the War of Independence (see War of Independence).

    Greece’s first parliament building, this is now a museum specializing in the War of Independence.

  • 5. Numismatic Museum/ Schliemann’s House

    This collection of coinage is housed in the mansion of Heinrich Schliemann, discoverer of the Mycenae treasure.

  • 6. Museum of the History of Greek Costume

    Over 6,000 items of clothing, jewellery and adornments showing the variety of Greek dress through the ages.

  • 7. Plateia Kolonaki

    The hottest spot for people-watching in trendy Kolonaki. Enjoy overpriced drinks and watch the beautiful people go by.

  • 8. Plateia Dexameni

    Greener and lower-key than Plateia Kolonaki, and home to one of Athens’ nicest outdoor cinemas.

  • 9. Friday Morning Street Market

    One of Athens’ most vital fruit ‘n’ veg markets.

  • 10. Gennadius Library

    This library of multilingual volumes is among the world’s best for all subjects Hellenistic.
