Top 10 Mid & Budget Outside Athens
-
1. Hotel Ganimede
The rooms in this 19th-century mansion are simple but elegant; however, the real draw is the combination of a courtyard garden overflowing with fragrant flowers, the sumptuous breakfasts and the warm hospitality of the Italian owners.
-
2. Archontiko
The themed rooms sound kitschy, but most manage to work. The “Bridal” has a huge canopy bed draped with sheer white linen; the “At Sea” is decorated like a boat; while adventurous couples go for the “Conception”, with a round bed and mirrored ceiling. When not enjoying their rooms, guests can stroll in the pleasant garden.
-
3. Hotel Belle Helene
German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann slept here (room No. 3) while excavating Mycenae, and many a classicist has followed in his footsteps. Modern tourists can enjoy clean, quiet, comfortable rooms in addition to the hotel’s historic cachet.
-
4. Pension Acronafplia
If this pretty pension is full, the owners can find rooms for you in one of their other small hotels around town. Within the pension, the accommodation varies – not all rooms have private bathrooms or air conditioning, but the pricing reflects this fairly. Many options are very pleasant, including rooms with colourfully painted wooden floors and wrought-iron beds.
-
5. Dimitris Bekas
The best budget option in Nafplio. These rooms in the old city are plain and spare, but clean, and there’s a great sea view from the sitting area on the roof. All rooms have televisions, but most share a bathroom. No A/C, but fans and the high location keep things cool.
-
6. King Othon
This two-storey Neo-Classical building with delightfully painted ceilings is located near the centre of old Nafplio. Comfortable rooms come in several sizes, and breakfast includes home-baked goodies.
-
7. Hotel Tholos
This is a good budget option in Delphi. Rooms are cheap, clean and nicely furnished, and the owners are friendly.
-
8. Hotel Olympic
A slightly more up-market, but still very affordable, Delphi option. Rooms are cosy, rustic and spotless, and the fireplace in the lounge feels great during snowy winters (the peak season).
-
9. Hotel Parnassos
A good budget option just outside the mountain village of Arachova. There is one bathroom for every two of the spare but clean rooms. No A/C, but Mount Parnassos rarely gets hot enough to need it.
-
10. Eginitiko Arhontiko
A 19th-century mansion with loads of character: painted ceilings, a stained-glass-windowed parlour and a garden courtyard. Rooms are small and clean, albeit with a few peeling paint patches here and there and banging pipes.
